UG's Technology Faculty to be among key beneficiaries of $100M GGMC grant

The Guyana Geology and Mines Com-mission (GGMC) through the Ministry of Natural Resources has awarded a grant for a total of $100 million to the University of Guyana (UG) for the Faculty of Technology, supporting programmes, research and scholarships.

Minister of Natural Resources Raphael Trotman, who engineered the grant, and UG Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ivelaw Griffith signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the grant, described as one of the biggest the university has received, at the latter’s office yesterday.

The University of Guyana (UG), the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) and the Transport Sports Club (TSC) were all in the winner’s row as action continued in the New Building Society (NBS), Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) second division competition over the weekend.

UG got past Everest by four wickets to continue their unbeaten run coasting to their second consecutive win of the competition.

The Ministry of Natural Resources, the Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and the University of Guyana (UG) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for a $100 million philanthropic education grant for the year 2017-2018. The grant will provide the University of Guyana’s, Faculty of Technology with much-needed equipment for its geology labs, curriculum development, training, outreach, and field research, all linked to the emerging oil and gas sector.

It also provides specific allocations for all other faculties for student-centered enhancements at the university.

University of Guyana defeated Everest Cricket Club by four wickets when action in the Georgetown Cricket Association New Building Society Ltd second division 40-over tournament continued on Saturday.
Batting first, Everest CC scored 162 all out in 36 overs at Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary. Saheed Mohamed scored 40, while Ronaldo Renee made 33 and Kevin Paul 31. Linden Austin snared 3-24 and Dwayne Dodson 3-45.
UG responded with 164-6 in 29.5 overs. Keron Sewnarine struck 43 not out, while Dodson got 29 and Melroy Stephenson 26; Rasheed captured 3-34.

Seven Students from the Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Guyana (UG) were selected to participate in the Florida International University (FIU) McNair Scholars Research Conference 2017, from Wednesday, October 19 to October 20, 2017. The conference is being held at the FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus, the participants from a number of institutions will share their research and explore graduate studies possibilities.

The University of Guyana (UG) and the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), yesterday recorded wins in the latest round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Noble House Seafoods, second-division 40 – overs competition.

UG completed a comprehensive seven-wicket win over the Guyana Defence Force (GCF) at Camp Ayanganna. After winning the toss, GDF decided to bat and were dismissed for a paltry 155 in 39.1 overs with off-spinner Dwayne Dodson picking up 4 -13.

The 2017 season of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/Noblehouse Seafoods, 2nd Division 2-day tournament continued last weekend at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) with a satisfying encounter between University of Guyana (UG) and Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC). UG salvaged 1st innings points in the match that was drawn. On the opening day, MSC won the toss and forced UG to bat. In response, the students amassed a total of 128 runs all out from 34.3 overs.
