The University of Guyana (UG) continues their impressive run in the New Building Society (NBS) Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) 40 – overs second division competition by notching up two wins over the weekend.

UG on Saturday, thumped Police by a mammoth 146 runs on the back of a fine century from Omesh Dhanram who slammed 133 after UG were sent in and piled on 350 before being dismissed in the 40th over.

Dhanram was supported by the consistent Keron Sewnarine (59) and Suresh Dhanai (56) as the students piled it on.

A Food and Drug Laboratory Complex is slated to be established at the University of Guyana’s (UG) Turkeyen Campus following a ground-breaking ceremony. 

The new complex will lessen Guyana’s dependence on external laboratories to conduct analysis which has restricted access to some international markets. It will also allow for improved monitoring, regulation and compliance with international standards required to penetrate these markets.

The new Executive Body of the University of Guyana Students’ Society (UGSS) was on Friday installed and Vice Chancellor, Professor Ivelaw Griffith, charged the body to keep their constituents informed of new developments.

“Keep in communication with your constituents that you represent. They would not all be able to be in one place at one time… Keep them informed and enable them with the information to separate fiction from facts,” Griffith urged, during his address to the executive body.

The University of Guyana (UG) on Wednesday held a ceremonial turning of the sod for the proposed Student Society Complex Building at its Turkeyen Campus.

According to a Department of Public Information (DPI) report, the building is currently being constructed by M & P Investments on the southern section of the Turkeyen Campus. It is expected to be completed in February, 2018.

Oil needs ‘a whole new architecture’ of public sector workers

Public sector reform is in a comatose state despite years of work and an investment of millions of US dollars, Professor Michael E. Scott, who also serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, has said.

He indicated that this was troubling at a time when Guyana is about to experience radical transformation with the game-changing oil and gas sector.

University of Guyana (UG) Vice-Chancellor Professor Ivelaw Griffith is not backing down from his insistence that wage hikes for academic staff be tied to their performance.

“This university has lots of performance issues,” Griffith noted on Friday, while saying it would be irresponsible of him to negotiate salaries and not speak of the performance of staff.

Huawei, a leading global information and communication technology (ICT) solutions provider, today (Friday) announced the launch of its “Telecom Seeds for the Future” programme for the first time in Guyana.

This programme will see Huawei partnering with the University of Guyana (UG),  to provide three (3) of the UG’s top ICT and Telecommunication studies students a two-week opportunity during which they will receive the latest in technology training at the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China.

University of Guyana (UG) Vice Chancellor, Professor Ivelaw Griffith said lecturers would first have to submit all outstanding grades as part of a new performance-driven criteria before they could receive salary increases for 2017, but President of the Workers Union (UGWU), Bruce Haynes said his union would have none of it.

Dr Leyland Lucas,  Visiting Professor at the School of Entrepreneur-ship and Business Innovation (SEBI) at the University of Guyana has said that the pursuit of an effective local content policy for the oil and gas industry must seek, among other things, to create a local content policy that seeks to bring an equity of benefits.

The University of Guyana’s 51st Convocation will see three different graduation ceremonies held in November.

According to the Registrar, Dr. Nigel Gravesande a two-part session is scheduled to be conducted on November 11th; and another at the Tain Campus in Berbice on November18th.
