The University of Guyana’s Turkeyen Campus yesterday sent its largest graduating class into the world.
The University of Guyana (UG) in collaboration with the Caribbean Alliance of National Psychological Associations (CANPA) today presented a Suicide, Youth Violence and Professional Psychology Symposium at the Pegasus Hotel.
The all-day symposium saw presentations from academics and stakeholders of the education and health sectors on Suicide, Violence, and Psychology.
Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings stated that the symposium is timely and relevant since it comes at a time when Guyana is faced with many social problems.

SABOTAGE has been an enduring plague in the body of the Guyanese nation, critically compromising its development. As of January 2018, persons will have the opportunity to attend courses for Psychology at the University of Guyana (UG), following the launch of the programme on Monday evening at the institution’s Turkeyen campus.
In a feature address, Minister within Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings said that the inauguration of the programme demonstrates the efforts made by the university in assisting government’s agenda to address mental health issues.
Support staff of the University of Guyana (UG) are set to receive a retroactive salary increase, but lecturers will have to wait for their ‘back-pay’ as the unions continue to reject efforts by the administration to include performance as a condition.

Unlike previous years, the University of Guyana will be hosting two Convocation ceremonies this year to reduce the length of the ceremony as some 1,800 students are expected to graduate.
The 51st Convocation at the Turkeyen Campus will be held on November 11, 2017.
As Guyana continues to place emphasis on food and nutrition security, the Agriculture Ministry and the University of Guyana is seeking to establish a food and nutrition security institute.
At the consultation exercise, which was recently held at the Marriott Hotel, Agriculture Minister Noel Holder stated that much emphasis is being placed on strengthening food and nutrition security in the Caribbean and Government continues to plug an immense number of resources into strategies aimed at strengthening such areas.
With a determined goal to actualise local food security, the University of Guyana (UG) has collaborated with the Ministry of Agriculture to examine the possibility of establishing an Institute of Food Security.
The consultation, which opened this morning at the Marriot International Hotel, seeks to raise awareness and assess the status of food security in Guyana and the Caribbean region and assess the role an institute would have locally and regionally.
