UG agrees to host Law School

The University of Guyana (UG) has agreed to host the J.O.F Haynes Law School at its Turkeyen Campus and has since written the Attorney General, Basil Williams about its decision.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University, Dr Barbara Reynolds confirmed to the News Room during a recent interview that the administration “will make the appropriate arrangements to host the law school”.

Today, the University of Guyana began consultations on identifying and meeting demands for engineering and operations management skills in the oil and gas industry.

The one-day symposium was held at the Marriott Hotel, Georgetown. Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman, in commending the university for its resourcefulness, noted that this stakeholder engagement advances the local content narrative.

Minister of Natural Resources Raphael Trotman Friday outlined a series of initiatives the government is currently engaged in to create an enabling environment for the oil and gas industry to thrive and for the nation to “flourish.”

“This new sector will provide increased revenue for the country whilst offering significant opportunities for the development of our businesses and talents.

“To say that it will be transformative will be to understate its impact,” Trotman said at a symposium organised by the University of Guyana’s Faculty of Technology.

UNIVERSITY of Guyana (UG) students studying geography got the unique opportunity last Wednesday of learning hands-on about using the platform, OpenStreetMap (OSM).

The occasion was the observance of Geographic Information System (GIS) Day, which happens to coincide with observances to mark Geography Awareness Week, better known as GEOWEEK.

The event, which was hosted by UG in collaboration with a host of other agencies, was held on campus at the Centre for Information Technology.

Some 41 student/athletes from the University of Guyana (UG) are set to depart Guyana today and tomorrow for the Organization of Universities of Latin American and Caribbean (UDUAL) Games in Curacao.

The games, which are scheduled to run from November 23- 27 will see participation from countries including Bonaire, Panama, Santa Domingo, Guyana and host Curacao.

The Guyana contingent will compete in four of the disciplines.

Along with the returning basketball team, for the first time UG will have teams competing in the chess, table tennis and track and field.

THE University of Guyana recently held its annual convocation at which over 2000 students graduated from the various departments at that institution. Not unexpectedly, it was a time for celebration as many of the graduates were first-generation achievers, blazing a trail for others to follow. Others were continuing in a family tradition set by earlier generations.

SOME 220 were conferred with degrees, diplomas and certificates when the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) held its 16th convocation ceremony on Saturday.

Berbice radio personality Treshan Budhram from the “Morning Spice Show” was adjudged this Year’s valedictorian.

Addressing the gathering on the university tarmac, he urged his fellow graduating class of 2017 to channel their achievementsw into becoming innovators.

Jamaican reggae artist Chronixx yesterday graced the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen Campus, where he delivered messages of spirituality and love to an auditorium filled with students.

Chronixx, born Jamar McNaughton, is in Guyana for GTT’s Smile Guyana concert, which is scheduled for tonight.

However, hundreds of students gathered in the George Walcott Lecture Theatre for the “Chronixx on Campus” event, which promised them the opportunity to interact with the musician, pose questions, and possibly even memorialise the moment with a photo.

Dear Editor,

Last Tuesday evening, I went to the University of Guyana Vice Chancellor’s Conversation (on the Law and Society). It was the first event hosted by the VC to which I lent my presence. There were other events that I wished to attend, but the invitation to those specified a dress code, which I would not give anyone the right to dictate to me about.
