UG Moves forward With Governance Reform

The University Council met in extraordinary session on July 27, 2018 and considered and approved proposed changes to the University of Guyana Act and the University Statutes, which are the key components of UG’s governance. In relation to the Act, the changes include reducing the membership of the University Council from 26 to 17 and removing the provisions for special interests and international representation from Britain, Canada, the USA and UWI.

Although the University of Guyana (UG) has started preparing to cater to nurturing skills for the oil and gas sector with its planned opening of a Department of Petroleum and Geological Engineering next January, Vice-Chancellor Ivelaw Griffith says it is only a small part of the comprehensive plans he has for the institution.

“The business of oil and gas is not limited to technology. Coming into the industry, we are going to need people with the education skills and expertise in many areas,” he said.

The University of Guyana (UG) in its efforts to re-connect with past graduates and past faculty staff, last week Wednesday, launched the Berbice campus chapter of its Alumni Association. The goal of the Alumni Association is to connect graduates and past faculty and staff of UG in a reciprocally beneficial relationship of investing, nurturing, fundraising, mentorship and development. Persons are being urged to give back to UG through scholarships, mentorship, equipment, books, internships, monetary gifts, travel bursaries and through other kind gestures.

The University of Guyana (UG) on Thursday launched a two-day symposium aimed at developing approaches to address the underperformance of boys in the education system.

The Symposium on Boys’ Education, organised under the theme “Bridging the Gender Divide: Stemming the Tide of Male Underachievement in the Education System,” was held at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, The Commonwealth of Learning, UNICEF and CARICOM.

Farmers in Berbice will soon have access to a $24Million soil and disease testing centre that could send record rice yields even higher.

The unit is a collaboration between Nand Persaud Group of Companies and the University of Guyana’s Berbice Campus and it should be in place in about three months.

At the sod turning for the building today at the John’s Science Centre, President of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, Poonai Bhigroog noted the initiative is a step in the right direction in advancing agriculture in a region where it is the backbone of the economy.
