Staff of the University of Guyana (UG) on Monday welcomed the new batch of 2018/2019 university students, at the George Walcott Lecture Theatre at its Turkeyen Campus.
Registrar at the University of Guyana, Dr. Nigel Gravesande explained that the diversity of the student and faculty population has seen massive growth this year, with members coming from 35 different countries, and all the administrative regions in Guyana.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana (UG), Professor Ivelaw Griffith has announced that the institution’s press is in the final stages of printing its first batch of publications before year-end.

Professor Griffith explained that the institution has been able to receive its third and final endorsement to move forward.

Cabinet recently approved the payment of a state pension to well-known historian Sr Mary Noel Menezes, Minister of State Joseph Harmon said yesterday, while announcing that there will be an increase in the maximum annual rate currently being paid.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing, Harmon said Cabinet saw Menezes, Professor Emeritus, University of Guyana (UG), as “most deserving” of a state pension.

As part of the University of Guyana’s (UG) effort to provide a platform to spotlight creative arts, two authors on Monday evening launched their books, at the Education Lecture Theatre (ELT).

Red Hibiscus written by Scott Ting-A-Kee, a former student of UG and recipient of the Joyce Adler Prize in 2016, contains prose and poetry whilst Creole Chips edited by Dr. Juanita Cox is a re-publication and compilation of the writings of the late Edgar Mittelholzer.

Ershaad Ali spun a web around Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) before Omesh Danram smashed an unbeaten half century to lead University of Guyana (UG) to a seven-wicket win at MYO on Sunday in the New Building Society/ Georgetown Cricket Association second-division 40-overs competition.

MYO won the toss and batted first but were bowled out for 93 in 30.4 over. UG needed only 15.4 overs to chase down the target, finishing with a six to close 99-3.

Stained  by the horrific tragedy of Jonestown in the late 1980’s and recently maligned by a New York  Times writer, according to ExxonMobil, the oil discovery off Guyana’s northern coast will top 4 billion barrels and Guyana will become a leading oil producing nation in the region. However, owing to the large number of Guyanese who emigrate, much of the nation’s skills and expertise, including those that could contribute significantly to the oil industry’s success, reportedly reside in the Diaspora.

“Attaining my secondary school education has been a gigantic accomplishment in my life. I attended the J.C Chandisingh Secondary School (JCCSS) 2011-2016, a highly recognised school in Berbice.

During my time at JCCSS, I learnt many valuable lessons about who I am and the world around me. Secondary school has revealed to me my strongest and most valuable passions in the subjects of Social Studies and English Language. I also recognised my gift of public speaking in Grade 10.
