University of Guyana welcomes over 3,000 new students
The University of Guyana on Monday commenced its classes and welcomed over 3,000 new students to its Turkeyen Campus.
Greeting them with an orientation ceremony, officers of the university encouraged the new students to practice certain values that will result in their success at the end of their respective programmes.
The Department of Public Information (DPI) visited the George Walcott Lecture Theatre (GWLT) to gain insight from some of the new students on the transition to the tertiary institution.
Johnali Stewart said the campus life was just as she predicted. “For me, it’s something that I was expecting, because I know this is the path that I want to do. I have to go through the university process to get to where I would like to be and what I want to become. So, there wasn’t any nervousness and I feel very confident. I cannot wait for what is ahead of me.”
Another new student, Kareem Miller said his expectations were different. “At first I felt kind of nervous, because of how persons speak of university. I thought it would have been really complicated and confusing. As I got closer, the wheels got thinner; it got easy. I think it will be a nice experience for me, it will just be cool.”
Other new students related that they look forward to strengthening their networking skills, and enhancing their education during their stint at the tertiary level.
New Communications Major, Tanisha Cole said, “I look forward to studying hard, joining groups, as the Vice-Chancellor said, getting active, getting to know the place and other people, and to finish off as a young successful person in getting my degree at a young age.”
Sharing the same view, new Social Work Major, Marina Thomas said, “I am nervous but excited to start the new course, and I do expect to learn more and enhance my skills and knowledge in the field of social science.”
According to the University of Guyana’s Registrar, Dr. Nigel Gravesande, the 3,000 plus new students were admitted from a total of 5,000 applications. He said the new student population makeup is from 35 different countries and from all regions of Guyana.
