Newly-formed civil society group RISE Guyana and other speakers at a University of Guyana forum on Thursday called for a return to constituency voting at general elections and there were also appeals for broad consultations on the reform of the constitution.
While many feel that much of Guyana’s political issues will be solved with proper constitutional reform, former Attorney General, Anil Nandlall is saying no. While he admitted that Constitutional Reform is important, Nandlall thinks that the solution to the issue is more fundamental. Nandlall said that Guyana needs more matured politicians who are prepared to stay true to the existing Constitution. The politician made his views known as he delivered remarks at the Turkeyen and Tain Talks 9, sponsored by the University of Guyana.
THE Ministry of Education will be moving to review a 20-year-old school curriculum, in an effort to re-energise the education sector here. Particular focus will be placed on English and Mathematics, subject areas the education system has been struggling with over time. Special focus will also be placed on the inclusion of the use of technology to aid teaching and learning, Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry has said.
Funded by the World Bank, the Education Ministry on Wednesday afternoon launched the Guyana Education Sector Improvement Project.
The project aims to improve teaching practices and student achievement in mathematics at the primary level in selected schools, strengthen the teaching capacity and improve the learning environment of the University of Guyana (UG) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS).
According to Project Coordinator, Quenita Walrond-Lewis, the project which costs US$14.03M, addresses critical areas in the delivery of quality education in Guyana.

As Registrar of The University of Guyana, I wish to respond to and clarify a number of issues initially raised in a published article entitled, ‘Guyanese robbed of opportunity to study at Leeds University’ dated September 1, 2017 which was recently recirculated in various social media outlets during the period commencing September 14, 2017 and subjected to comments in letters to the editor, specifically in the Kaieteur News of September 17, 2017.
Hector Edwards, Secretary General of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) said last night that he expected the Guyana team to this year’s South American Youth Games in Chile to do well.
The games will run from September 27 – October 8 and the Guyana contingent is expected to leave Tuesday.
Speaking to Stabroek Sports, the former national cyclist, now University of Guyana lecturer, said that he has high hopes from the disciplines of boxing and athletics.
In addition to the above two disciplines, Guyana will also compete in badminton, basketball (3x) and table tennis.

Minister of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes today donated a number of chairs to the University of Guyana and Theatre Guild. The chairs were taken from the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) which is currently being renovated.
Minister Hughes said that with the ongoing rehabilitation of the ACCC, the Ministry decided to donate the chairs that would no longer be needed at the centre. “We decided that we would donate those chairs to two organisations.”
THE University of Guyana (UG) has been warned to be very careful with the amount of degree programmes it offers to complement Guyana’s emerging oil- and-gas industry. This is according to Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Ivelaw Griffith, who said taking the professional recommendation into consideration, the university will be offering less degree programmes and more “short courses” in the field. In fact, he said what is actually needed at this time is more technical skills, which are being taught at the technical institutes.
University of Guyana defeated Guyana Defence Force by an innings and 159 runs when the Georgetown Cricket Association/GISE/Star Party Rentals/Trophy Stall first division two-day tournament continued last weekend. UG took first strike and posted 359 all out at GDF ground. Omesh Danram struck 114, while Keron Sewnarine made 51; Damion Waldron bagged seven wickets. GDF were sent packing for 81 in reply. Dennis Heywood grabbed 5-14, Danram 3-6 and Suresh Dhanai 2-17. Batting a second time GDF were bowled out for 112 with Waldron scoring 61. Dhanai and Heywood claimed three wickets each.
The Gandhi Youth Organization ended day one of the Star Party Rental/Trophy Stall GCA first-division, two-day competition on 133 for six, still trailing the University of Guyana by 139 runs at Malteenoes Cricket Club ground, yesterday.
UG had earlier won the toss and elected to bat allowing middle order batsman Devon George to stroke his maiden first-division century, an even 100, inclusive of six maximums and eight fours to hand UG the edge on day one.
