Reading space created for pupils in parts of regions 5, 6

A number of primary school students in Regions Five and Six will now have a place in their schools to read thanks to a drive held by students of the University of Guyana, the Department of Public Information (DPI) said.

The Division of Education and Humanities in collaboration with the University of Guyana Berbice Campus’ Library and the Department of Education on Saturday held its second Christmas Cheer and Book Drive drawing which will mean 24 classrooms are to be provided with a complete reading space equipped with fully stocked bookshelves.

Efforts to bolster research at the University of Guyana (UG) recently were boosted by Caribbean Airlines (CAL) which underwrote attendance by several UG computer scientists at the 2018 Caribbean Academic of Sciences conference, which was held in Jamaica. The four-member team comprised three female computer scientists, some of whom received their first-ever invitations to showcase their research at the prestigious academic gathering.

Eagles and University of Guyana [UG] Trojans, secured easy wins in the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association [GABA] ‘League Championship’, on Wednesday at the Burnham Court, Middle and Carmichael streets.

Eagles soared past Vikings 66-57. The combination of Sherland Gillis and Shamar Huntley led the way for the victor with 20 and 18 points respectively.

 

Adding seven and six points each were Kheon Evans and Dequan Wray respectively. On the other side, Osafa Johnson and Eon Meredith top scored with 11 points apiece.

During the University of Guyana 52nd Convocation and Conferral of Honorary Doctorate Degrees which was held at the National Cultural Centre on Saturday November 10, 2018, a total of twenty-nine ranks of the Guyana Police Force graduated with Masters, Degrees and Diplomas in various disciplines.

Recently retired Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud DSM also graduated with a Commonwealth Masters of Public Administration.

The second annual Diaspora and Entrepreneurial Conference is set for June 16-20, 2019 at the Ramada Hotel, Providence, East Bank Demerara.
