IMAREE is mandated to work in synergy with other institutions within the University, national and international landscapes, to fill existing gaps as it relates to the marine and riverine ecosystems, education, training, research and publications, innovation, practice and consulting services.

In fulfilling this mandate, it will take a transdisciplinary systems approach, recognizing the complexity of these ecosystems and the challenges they present to the sustainability of human societies.

The core work of IMAREE focuses on six nationally and globally important areas:

  1. Marine and riverine biodiversity, ecology and pollution
  2. Marine engineering, computing and robotics
  3. Marine and riverine governance, jurisprudence and policy
  4. Economics, tourism and transportation
  5. Ports: Management, Security and preservation
  6. Aquatic pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals
