- GSC 519 - Research Methods & Analysis in the Social Sciences
Credits : 3
This graduate course is aimed at equipping students with a comprehensive and analytical understanding of the principles and practices of social science research. In seeking to expose students to the relevant theoretical perspectives that underlie the research process, the course supplies a platform on which skills and competencies to conduct empirical studies of social phenomena would be developed.
- ISC 511 - Theories of International Relations
Credits : 3
The focus of this course is on the theories and methods of analysis of the Global System. This course will equip participants with the intellectual tools to analyse issues in the international system. It introduces participants to International Studies and its location in the Social sciences as a field of study. It also introduces participants to the major concepts used in the analysis of the international system by the three major methodological schools of thought that gained ascendancy in the field since the end of the Second World War – Realism, Pluralism and Structuralism/Globalism. It will also provide an insight into the methods of analysis of the Global system using the above perspectives, along with other contending perspectives.

The aim of this course is to provide a substantial understanding about the political economy of Latin America and the Caribbean and to familiarize students with the major policy issues articulated by governments and other major actors in the region. The course sets out to promote a critical perspective on the region’s contemporary political issues and to introduce students to the major theoretical concepts in the field of politics which are relevant to the study of Latin America and the Caribbean.

In the process, the various theoretical approaches to the study of international organizations will be utilized. The course is also intended to introduce students to the study of multilateral diplomacy as it is practiced in international organizations.

The course presumes that students have a basic knowledge of social science methods. It is essentially concerned with equipping students with practical experiences in conducting social scientific research.
Therefore, in pursuance of this objective, it was necessary to include topics in social statistics for the students, because statistics is indeed an integral part of research. With statistics is especially critical to data analysis, it permeates of research design and data collection.

This course is designed to familiarize participants with both the theoretical and practical aspects of foreign policy and diplomacy. It is expected that participants will be aware of major issues attracting the attention of diplomatic players both domestically/regionally and globally. The focus will be to a large extent on the behaviour of small states in the international system since 1945 as well as of the critical actors in the contemporary international system.

There will be an examination of the history of the development of Foreign Policy in Guyana in the context of the major issues involved in International Relations. There will also be an intensive introduction into the major issues involved in the international relations of Guyana while providing the opportunity for analysis of the variables which have informed and are informing the formulation and implementation of Guyana’s Foreign Policy.
