The LLB Degree is designed for fulltime students. The courses are organized on a semester system of a minimum of 45 contact hours for each course per semester. Each course carries 3 credit oints and a student must complete 90 credits (i.e. three credit courses) in his/her programme in order to graduate.
Students are qualified for admission to the LLB programme if they possess any of the following qualifications:
A graduate or undergraduate degree (BA, BSC) from the University of Guyana or other recognized universities.
GCE examination in five (5) subjects, at least two of which must be at the advanced level, and the remainder at ‘O’ Level or CXC examination.
A Diploma from the University of Guyana or other recognized universities.
Candidates who have completed a preliminary year at the University of Guyana, i.e. the first year of the Degree programme of any department (successful completion of the preliminary year will not automatically guarantee a student admission to the LLB programme. The candidate must achieve a satisfactory grade in his/her examinations).
The University is prepared to consider applications from persons who do not strictly satisfy the normal admission requirements but who have equivalent academic qualifications. In particular, mature applicants over twenty-six who have shown evidence of academic and professional achievement can be considered. This may provide an opportunity to read for a law degree for those who have already been associated with the practice of law in some way e.g. clerks of court, legal assistants, civil servants, police officers, and so on. The Department may recommend that applicants in this category complete a preliminary year preferably in one of the departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
