Faculty of Social Sciences

The Faculty of Social Sciences welcomes you the viewer to its website. We hope that we will provide for your informational needs and do welcome your suggestions and comments.

This Faculty which I am privileged to lead at this defining period of our institution’s history is one of the original units of the University. Since the launching of our University forty-five (45) years ago, it has remained the largest Faculty both numerically and in terms of programmes delivered. It boasts five (5) undergraduate departments offering Diplomas and Degrees. There is also one Graduate department which offers a limited range of Graduate Diplomas and Master’s programmes. There are also two specialist units which are attached to two of our departments the Institute of Development Studies - Department of Economics and the Centre of Communication Studies – Department of Sociology.

Over the years of our existence we have provided Graduates for local, regional and global needs in keeping with the mission of our university. Our alumni have often acquitted themselves with distinction whether in the furtherance of their academic careers or in professional pursuits. We are extremely proud of you and your accomplishments. You are most valued as our alumni with whom we use this medium to maintain contact and acknowledge your continued support. Of those who come to mind recently, include Prof. Ivelaw Griffith, Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, York College, City University of New York (CUNY), we congratulate you and offer our best wishes for a successful tenure.

Our Faculty today also boasts a globally diverse staff that bring to us a wide range of experiences, knowledge and skills. However, still among us is eminent scholar and thinker distinguished Professor Clive Y. Thomas who has remained a pillar of our Faculty. Even as we welcome our global and regional colleagues we commend those alumni who have proudly served and continue to serve this vibrant and vanguard Faculty.

As we look to the future amidst the challenges our institution faces we are hopeful. We have already recognized and pursued opportunities to modernize our Faculty as well as its service delivery capabilities while striving to institutionalize quality assurance. This we will continue to do in collaboration with our alumni stakeholders and institutional partners locally, regionally and globally.

Most valued Viewers this is the beginning of an enterprising engagement. To you our prospective clients, collaborators or students, I take this opportunity to welcome you on board as our most valued stakeholders. Join us in our task to deliver growth and transformation in human and social development.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!
MICHAEL E. SCOTT (PhD) - DEAN, FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, UG. 2009.
