Turkeyen Library, Courts host another successful Reading Programme
- Reading is "Fun-Damental" for growth and development
The University of Guyana Library in collaboration with Courts Guyana Inc recently held its seventh annual 'Reading is Fun' programme for children between the ages of nine and twelve years old.
Courts Guyana Inc. presented a cheque of five hundred and twenty five thousand Guyana dollars for full sponsorship of the programme. The money was used to provide snacks, teaching materials and special prizes for the children.
Health Sciences Lecturer receives Special Commendation
Ms. Rajini Kurup, Lecturer in the Faculty of Health Sciences, is the recipient of a Special Commendation from the Caribbean Health Research Council (CHRC) for her research entitled "Control of Intestinal Parasitic Infection in Communities of South Saint Lucia."
Ms. Kurup was identified by CHRC as one of the outstanding researchers who presented at the 56 Annual CHRC Scientific Meeting held in Guyana from April 14-16, 2011.
According to the Director of CHRC, Donald T. Simeon, Kurup is among the investigators whose research stood out in terms of methodology as well as the relevance of their findings to information policy, programmes and practice.
Former senior officers of UG to be honoured during research day
The University of Guyana will be hosting a Research Day for all disciplines including Education, Social Sciences, Humanities, Pure and Applied Sciences on Thursday June 30 in the Education Lecture Theatre, Turkeyen Campus. Staff will have the opportunity to present their research to the public and obtain on the spot feedback about their work.
There will be an Opening Session and six panels from 9.00 h to 16.30 h

Students donate over one million dollars worth of items to Turkeyen Campus
Students of English 123-Technical Communication, on May 4, handed over a number of items including sports equipment, dust bins, fans, white-boards, chairs, and 30 renovated combination tops valued at over $1,000,000.00 to the Bursar (ag.) Mr. Neil Browman, for use on the Turkeyen campus. The project also included the construction of an honorary board, repainting of classrooms, and the installation of a potable water system.
Professor Tewari appointed Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry
Professor Brij Bhushan Tewari lecturer in Chemistry and former Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences has been conferred with the title of Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Cambridge, United Kingdom. Professor Tewari is now entitled to use the designatory letters FRSC after his name

Personnel holds workshop for new lecturers
The Personnel Division hosted a workshop for 18 new lecturers and administrative staff from Friday, January 14 to Friday, January 21, on the Turkeyen campus.
The aims of the workshop were to provide new lecturers with relevant information to enhance their knowledge of the University system, to prepare them for a smooth transition into the University environment, and for efficient and effective functioning in the institution. The workshop also provided a forum where the new lecturers were able to raise issues of concern.
