  • Oct. 1 1963 The University of Guyana was officially opened in a blaze of emotional glory in the auditorium of Queen's College, offering programmes in Arts, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences.
  • 1967 The Faculty of Education was established
  • 1968 The University's first Convocation
  • Oct. 6, 1969 The Institution occupied its present site at Turkeyen
  • 1969 The Faculty of Technology was established
  • 1970 The first-year programme leading to UWI Law Degree started
  • 1975 Participation in Natural Service was made a requirement for all University students
  • 1975 The Amerindian Research Unit was established - it started as the Amerindian Languages Project
  • 1976 A Department of Extra Mural Studies, now called the Institute for Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE), was started in the Faculty of Education
  • 1976 The Master's Programme in Education commenced
  • 1977 The Faculty of Agriculture was established
  • 1981 The Faculty of Health Sciences was established
  • 1982 Dr. George Walcott, the first Guyanese Vice-Chancellor, was appointed
  • 1985 The Medical Programme commenced in the Faculty of Health Sciences
  • 1987 The Forestry Unit was established
  • 1989 The Walter Rodney Chair in History was established
  • 1990 The Environmental Studies Unit was established
  • 1991 The University won the Inter-Regional Universities Debating Competition for the first time
  • 1992 Distance Education was introduced at the University through the IDCE
  • 1993 The full Law Degree programme was introduced
  • 1994 The University's first dormitory, The New Building Society Hall of Residence, was opened
  • 1994 The University's Cost Recovery Programme was implemented
  • 1994 The University adopted the semester system
  • 1994 Approval was given by Cabinet for the abolition of mandatory National Service
  • 1999 The Edward Beharry Hall of Residence was constructed
  • Nov. 18 2000 The University's second campus, at Tain Corentyne, Berbice, was opened
  • 2002 The Degree in Nursing Programme commenced
  • 2002 The Faculty of Agriculture was renamed the Faculty of Agriculture & Forestry
  • 2002 The Berbice Campus held its first Convocation at Tain
  • 2003 The Faculties of Arts and Education merged to become the School of Education and Humanities.
